The story of volleyball standout Sophie Scott, a redshirt junior at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of perseverance, positivity, and courage in confronting repeated injuries and the emotional challenges that come with them.
During her junior year, just months after committing to play at Cal, the Portland, Oregon native suffered a devastating knee injury. Once a nationally ranked prospect featured on multiple “Top Players” lists, her dream of playing college volleyball suddenly felt uncertain. But Sophie refused to let the injury define her. After surgery and months of rehab, she missed her senior season, but embraced a mentorship role, guiding her Catlin Gabel High School teammates to their best finish in program history.
At Cal, her perseverance paid off. She earned a starting role as a freshman, ranking among the conference’s top ten blockers for the season. During her freshman spring semester, she endured a second knee surgery. Nevertheless, Sophie recovered and returned to the starting position mid-sophomore season, finishing #11 in the conference for blocks per set. Sadly, just as she was regaining momentum, Sophie sustained another injury to her other knee. With each surgery came renewed doubt and emotional strain. “I can’t do this anymore,” she admitted to her parents after the third injury, as her mental health became her family’s top concern.
Through counseling, self-reflection, and support from her medical team, coaches, and teammates, Sophie learned to lean on others and find strength in vulnerability. Her personal mantra “this too shall pass” became her daily reminder to keep going. Each workout and practice contributed to her mental growth as much as her physical healing.
“I knew each court session, gym day, and rehab and physical therapy appointment was a step closer to being where I wanted to be, which was always physically and mentally stronger than before,” she said. “Volleyball is everything to me and has always been an outlet. I am grateful I learned how to turn adversity into strength.”
Now, healed, back on the court, and stronger than ever, Sophie faces her biggest test yet: supporting her father, Paul, who recently received a cancer diagnosis. Even amid another heartbreak and another mental hurdle, she is helping her father through his medical journey and recovery, proving that courage isn’t about never falling, but about finding the faith and resilience to stand back up.
