Santa Clara goalkeeper Eddy Marin’s journey is one of resilience, faith, and an unbreakable spirit. After a life-altering accident in October 2023, his return to the soccer field—and to life as he once knew it—has been nothing short of remarkable.
On October 9, 2023, the 6-foot-3-inch 205-lb Oakley, California native made his Bronco debut as a redshirt freshman when he got the starting nod in net against Stanford. He made four saves, including a penalty kick, in 63 minutes of action.
Just nine days later, Eddy was riding his scooter on his way to study when a car blindsided him. The impact left him unconscious for more than a week. When he woke up, he faced severe injuries, including vision loss in his right eye, hearing loss in his left ear, a broken wrist, and a life-threatening aneurysm that required emergency surgery. Over the next several months, he endured six surgeries and a physically and mentally exhausting recovery process.
Despite the immense challenges, Eddy refused to let his circumstances define him. He returned to school in the winter quarter while still undergoing medical treatment and remained involved with the team. Though he was forced to sit out during the 2024 season, he stayed engaged while supporting his teammates and participating in team functions. This perseverance and positive spirit earned him the Santa Clara University Athletics Department’s DJ Frandsen Award, given annually to student-athletes who exemplify courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
Now, with full medical clearance, Eddy is back on the field training with his team and looking forward to the 2025 fall season. His journey has been a mental and emotional battle, but his faith in God, along with the unwavering support of his family, friends, and teammates, has kept him moving forward.
“God gives His hardest battles to His toughest soldiers. I shouldn’t be alive today, but by His grace, I am,” said Eddy. “This experience has tested me in every way, but my faith and the people around me have carried me through. I share my story to inspire others—because miracles do happen.”
